99 Problems - Fast Pace Shots

Whilst trying to put our music video into chronological order in pace with the beat of our song, it can actually be very difficult. After looking at Jay Z's 99 problem video, it is clear he has put quick shots and clips in beat of the music and it has made it a little easier when arranging our video to visually experience how fast each has to be. 

Putting It Together

We finally started putting our entire beginning of our music video together on Friday! We have a real range of bits that we storyboarded originally. We decided to begin our music video with an establishing shot of a building as we see this is commonly done in most videos typical to our genre. The relationship between girl and boy is also shown in quickly by quick snapshots of being pushed aside - alike to Rihanna's We Found Love - the initial 6 seconds of our music video does not begin with the song but begins with a windy sound we managed to find on the LGFL sound website.

Similar Ideas

This newly released song caught my attention when I was watching the music video, as it seems to include quite of a lot of the techniques we've used as well as the ideas we already have! The idea of having quick flashes within our shots, the change from black and white to colour and the long scenic establishing shots of buildings. Theres a point in this video (around 0.17/0.18) where the colour changes from black and white to pink in quick flashes, which I think is particularly effective particularly if the change occurs on the beat of the song. I really enjoy the music video to this, as the beat of the song goes really well with the video and the timing of all the shots is really focused on, which is what we aim to achieve in our own. 

Introducing Band at the Beginning

FUTURES appears and stays on the screen for a good couple of seconds after the video has begun. This is an effect we would like to include into our video.

Ageing our Shots

Having looked at Lana Del Rey's Blue Jeans video, we gained inspiration with the effects we will be using for our music video, in particular the shots of the buildings and landscapes. The random flashes of clips throughout between the shots of her in front of a wall - with the contrast of black and white are inspirational and are what we were aiming to create. Below is the the video we have produced with all our best shots from the filming day with cutaway shots of previous filming - despite it simply being experimental practise, we will include the parts we like in our real thing.

Walking Shot

We need to still film the walking shot of our girl by a brick wall - which we were going to include at the beginning although we may switch the places of shots around a little bit according to what looks best. This video by Passion Pit contains the ageing effects as well as the shot of the girl walking in darkness. I hope we create something similar, which emphasises the girl's new found freedom.

Scenic Shots

Without realising, Wiz Khalifa seem to have shot similar building in similar ways in his Black and Yellow video! It was really inspiring watching his video, as it gave us some ideas as to where we could put our shots to enhance them within our video and ensure they were fully acknowledged by our audience. The opening shot of his video is a below shot of a building, appearing highly effective in setting of where the video is based.

OUR NEW SONG

We have finally found our new song! It is catchy with a good beat where we can incorporate all our original ideas into, along with lyrics so we have include lip syncing in there too. Despite being an old song - The Twelves have made a remix version, which creates the dance-y/electro sound to it as well as it having that retro/aged feel to it.

Song Choices

Whilst trying to find alternative songs, we came across this remix of an old classic. By using this song, we'd be able to add a real Retro feel, perhaps, by using a contrasting of age - youths singing along to a old song. As it is a remix, the beat is perfect, meaning we could include all our previous ideas. 

Unfortunately, we could not embed the official video of South Central - The Day I Die, however, we absolutely loved the pinhole idea - which was in the eye of a murderer whose role was to basically kill everybody in a car park. The style and beat of the song fit perfectly, and including a pinhole element into our music video would be extremely effective in establishing the setting.

Digitalism is very alike to the genre we have chosen for our music video. This music video, despite being very basic works very effectively. The revolving movement of the room is constantly at one shot type, yet the centre of the room is constantly changing. As the song increases in speed and time, it becomes darker - forming shadows and the use of lighting is recognised. This effect brings an edgy feel into focus, forming a sense of ambiguity. 

Bombay Bicycle Club

Absolutely love this song and the music video to go with it! They've even introduced the costume theme with the whole 'catch the panda' idea. Very quirky and upbeat, something we definitely want to create in video especially now we have decided that our chosen song by Justice may not fit what we intend to do.

Focus In/Focus Out Effect

I came across this Tyler the Creator song, which despite being extremely controversial and very strange, has a brilliant effect used throughout the video. As soon as it begins, the camera gradually zooms into him slowly focusing clearer until his entire image is visible. My group and I have already had ideas on perhaps using black silhouette lip syncing, as it creates a mysterious, unidentifiable element.

Inspiration

Earlier on in the week, Joely showed the group two music videos she came across during the Summer. I particularly enjoyed Mac Miller's Frick Park Market video, beginning with an establishing shot of where it is to be set (name of the song). Also noticing the lyrics literally matching up with some of the shots taken, which if done only a couple of times is a technique I'd be happy to use in our music video. After the artist enters the blue door, he goes into this dark room covered in UV paint. As discussed regularly before in the group, we love this idea - the contrast of a dark lit room with vibrant writing on the walls or even clothing. 


This video is very different to others we have seen, although it is animation, we gained a few ideas for it. The dinosaurs in the song move exactly to the beat of the music. This is something we could perhaps, recreate in our video by getting objects/people to move precisely to the rhythm of the beat. 

Music Videos

During our lesson, we each chose two cards, which stated a feature that we had to find in any music video. I received 'Lead Male Vocalist' and 'Interesting use of Lighting'. I chose Jack Penate's Torn on the Platform for the first one, as the video is quite quirky and very suitable for his indie style of music. 

Personally, I really enjoyed watching this humorous musicvideo, although it is very similar throughout and could perhaps be considered quite boring towards the end. It gives the audience an obvious understanding at the beginning that he starts his song in a garage with his band. Then, the animation comes in after they appear to be drawing the setting of a paper puppet show - which has the head of Jack Penate. 

For my interesting use of lighting music video, I found a Justin Timberlake song - Rock  Your Body and after came across Kanye West's - All of the Lights. 

Long shots are used to establish the setting - playing particular attention to the use of colourful spot lights, giving off the atmosphere of a club. There is a great performance element to this music video, as he has backing dancers that blend into the background in black, whilst he is the focal point in white. Movement is key, not only in the performance side but the lights are also moving to the beat of the music, which fits the genre of the song perfectly. 

This is a very unusual video, a lengthy black and white shot is used at the beginning of a small girl, which then flashes different vibrant colours before the quick, flashing lyrics are shown. These lyrics flash precisely at the time that they are spoken in the song. Throughout the song, shots of both Kanye and Rihanna are shown. In particular, Rihanna is against a black background with a huge spotlight on her - emphasizing her appearance, whilst, Kanye is on top of a police car whilst the flashing lights give connotations of risk and excitement.
